Sebastian Vettel wins in Abu Dhabi 09

Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber completed a Red Bull one-two in the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which is also ironically the last race of the 2009 season, with new World Champion Jenson Button rounding off the podium in third.

Despite being fantastic all weekend, including getting on pole position, Lewis Hamilton seemed to struggle with his lighter fuelled car and was driving slowly. It eventually became clear why this was, Lewis said he had difficulty slowing the car and it was a right rear brake problem meaning Hamilton had a cruel end to an average season for him and his McLaren team as he was forced to retire.

Jenson Button’s Brawn GP teammate Rubens Barrichello finished 4th.

In BMW Sauber’s final race they managed to pick up some points as Nick Heidfeld finished 5th. Robert Kubica on the other hand finished 10th.

Toyota had a good race in particular with their new driver Kamui Kobayashi who finished a good 6th in only his 2nd F1 race and showed some good pace in the car, a display which will surely mean he will secure a drive for next season. Other Toyota man Jarno Trulli finished 7th.

McLaren driver Heikki Kovalainen put in an impressive display finishing 11th after starting 18th following a gearbox replacement after qualifying. However fellow Finn Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari didn’t have a great race – he finished 12th and questions are still being asked about his future in F1 next season. The other Ferrari driver Giancarlo Fisichella – another man who may not be in F1 next season finished 16th.

The only other driver not to finish bar Hamilton was Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguesuari who claims he had car trouble, although for everyone else watching it seemed like he missed the Toro Rosso pit box and drove into their sister team Red Bull’s box, meaning he got no fuel put into his car and ran out of it on his out lap. He is only a rookie!

That is the end of the F1 for the year in terms of racing, but there will be much more to come throughout the winter on this blog, so you won’t have to go completely cold turkey!

And, as I wrote on today’s live blog:

That is a wrap for the race, weekend and indeed season. There will be more reaction on the blog soon: http://www.anf1blog.com. Join me for commentary in Bahrain in March 2010, for the season opener. Until then, keep reading the website and enjoy your winter break! Farewell, Jack!
