After a ‘highly constructive and positive’ meeting of the Formula One Commission (all the sport’s stakeholders) yesterday, they have agreed to a number of proposed rules.

2010 F1 Season

New points system

To encourage ‘racing to win’, the comission have agreed to change to the propsosed points system:

1st: 25pts
2nd: 18pts
3rd: 15pts
4th: 12pts
5th: 10pts
6th:  8pts
7th:  6pts
8th:  4pts
9th:  2pts
10th:  1pt

Tyre usage

The number of dry weather tyres sets allocated per driver has been reduced from 14 to 11.

In addition, to encourage teams to run during the Friday practice sessions, one set has to be returned before the start of the second practice session, and two sets before the start of the third practice session.

This rule change means that Bridgestone would have to supply less tyres. Could this be a bid from F1 to try to persuade Bridgestone to reverse their decision to leave F1 at the end of this season?

‘Top ten tyre’ rule

In order to introduce a further element of strategy, cars having participated in Q3 must start the race on the same set of tyres with which their grid time was set.

I personally don’t think this is a required rule change – why can’t we see a level playing field in F1 for once? If you are going to enforce this rule, just penalise the top 3 or 5, not drivers starting lower down, like 9th and 10th!

Double diffusers banned

The permitted height of the main diffuser was reduced from 175mm to 125mm and measures to exclude ‘double’ diffusers were agreed.
