At this time earlier on today I’d expected to have my qualifying report and live blog done and dusted , and to have begun preparing for tomorrow’s race.

However it wasn’t to be, the sheer amount of rain which poured at Suzuka today meant that no qualifying was held.

It was undoubtedly the correct decision, with rain teeming down there was just no way that the drivers would be able to put any speed down whatsoever without spinning. Anyone who’s driven F1 2010 in heavy rain will know!

Home hero Kamui Kobayashi echoed the sentiments of many of the other drivers and teams, praising the loyal fans who stuck around, but the correct decision was made:

“I feel so sorry for the spectators in the grandstands. All the Formula One supporters were very much looking forward to the weekend, and now they have hardly seen a car today and got terribly wet. But safety comes first, that is clear. We cannot drive in these conditions. We have to wait for better weather.”

Despite the miserable weather, the drivers kept themselves entertained in the pitlane using a variety of methods; Nick Heidfeld came up with the genius idea of having a boat race, which was later joined by Red Bull:

Elsewhere Lucas di Grassi and Timo Glock played a game of poker from the comfort of their garage, using a pair of slicks for seats! Well, they certainly won’t be needed today, will they?

The safety car was the only vehicle which got any decent amount of track time whatsoever, as it went out numerous times to analyse track conditions.

Sakon Yamamoto looked pretty chuffed to be able to stay tucked up at the back of the garage rather than face total humiliation in front of his home crowd:

Sebastian Vettel tried a stint behind the camera and nicked one of Getty Images’ cameras, producing some fine photos of his mechanics around the garage!

And finally, Lotus Racing made use of the time by doing some pit stop practice:

The result of today’s events mean that qualifying will be on at 02:00 BST, with the race at 07:00 BST. Despite these unearthly hours I will be trying my best to type legibly while being half asleep! See you there!

It is a case of what might have been for Toyota looking at images of their TF110 which will never be raced in Formula 1 due to their eleventh hour exit from the sport before the start of the 2010 season.

Kazuki Nakajima drove the impressive-looking Toyota TF110 in front of the team’s HQ in Cologne. The car features a radical nosecone, an extreme diffuser and believe it or not, a ride height adjustment system!

It certainly looks more competitive than the other cars Toyota had made over the years, and it sums up their time in F1 fairly well, that they are forced to pull out just as they seem to have developed a good car.

Yesterday in Kuala Lumpur the Petronas Pit Pulse took place, where Mercedes GP put on F1 demonstrations courtesy of their title sponsor.

The 2010 Mercedes GP MGP W01 was on show being driven by Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher, and Juan Manuel Fangio’s beautiful 1954 championship-winning Silver Arrow was driven by Nick Heidfeld. Also on show was the new Mercedes Formula 1 safety car.

The three German Mercedes GP drivers; Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg and Nick Heidfeld met the fans after the event.

Two reigning World Champions; F1′s Jenson Button and V8 Supercar’s Jamie Whincup swapped machinery for the day on Tuesday for a Vodafone promotion, who sponsor Button’s McLaren team, and Whincup’s TeamVodafone.

Whincup got to drive the McLaren Formula 1 car around the Albert Park Street Circuit in Melbourne, after Button tackled the circuit which will hold Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix in TeamVodafone’s Holden Commodore.

Button said:

“That was great! It was difficult to get used to: I was surprised by how much grip it had. I was carrying a lot of speed, but turned into a right-hander, got a lot of under-steer and ran off the Tarmac onto the painted run-off. But it was all good. In a Formula 1 car I’d have been closing my eyes at that point!”

Whincup could hardly contain his excitement having sampled the World Championship-winning 2008-spec MP4-23, saying:

“Jumping into a Formula 1 car is almost like going into space, or flying a fighter jet. It’s right up there with the best thing I could ever do.

“The car just does everything you’d want it to. The strain on my neck was amazing. The g-forces you feel are so much greater than I’d feel aboard my own race car. The F1 car is just a rocket ship. It’s another league.”

Button was impressed with the Australian’s drive:

“Jamie did a great job. He’s a racing driver, so he knows how to control a car. It was pretty dusty out there, so probably not the best time to be jumping behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car for the first time. But I could tell he had a lot of fun.”
